I would expect Narcissus tazetta italicus or ‘Early Pearl’ to be blooming right now, but this weekend in College Station I saw Narcissus ‘Golden Dawn’ already blooming.
Just down the road from the cabin, the Lent Lilies (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) are already beginning to peek!
And then this from a follower yesterday.
“Here in North Georgia we have had a very wet and mild winter and the early old fashion daffodils have been blooming for a week now. I call them Grandmother’s Johnny Quills because the bulbs came from my Grandmother’s yard who never called them Daffodils or Narcissus . She absolutely refused to call them anything but Johnny Quills. She once told me that Johnny Quills was the appropriate southern name. ”
I have never heard them called Johnny Quills before. Thank you faithful blog follower and friend for writing in and introducing us all to a new word. Now, I’m not getting my hopes up. I imagine the large mass displays of jonquils and Lent lilies will come in mid to late February, or even March as they normally do, but this unusually mild winter sure is giving us a sneak peek.

Still freezing at night and too cold and early in zone 7. The daffy leaves are up 4-inches tall, some crocus have bloomed since our days are sunny and 50-65.
So jealous of your blooms!.
Chris, I grew up knowing Jonquils as Johnny Quills also. That is what my grandma and great aunt called them. It probably wasn’t until I got more into horticulture that I found out it’s more frequently used common name was Jonquil!
i have lived in central virginia all my life. johnny quills is all i have ever known them as. that is what my grandma called them. they started blooming 2 weeks ago. my hundreds came from grandma, what wonderful memories i have in my yard.
Thank you all for sharing your memories with us. Glad to add a new common name to my vocab! Enjoy the blooms and happy spring!
