Sad Day

The landscape around the cabin changed dramatically yesterday when the calves were taken away from their mothers. Gruff male voices and rattling sounds outside our bedroom window early Sunday morning jolted
Chris out of bed. Cowboys arrived with their horses and trailers to do a little rounding up. Terrible, waling sad mooing let us know that the men and their prizes were leaving about an hour later. Several times throughout the day, the cows could be seen wandering the fields searching for their babies. :( This seems like such a drastic form of weaning. Checking on the internet, apparently there are various methods of weaning. One method includes separating the calves for a time from their mothers by a very secure fence.

Chris is pictured here looking a little groggy after a nice Sunday afternoon siesta.

Our evening stroll last night was cut short when the herd started uncharacteristically heading for us moaning and groaning. I am sad to say that I freaked out a little, jumped a nearby barbed wire fence, and took the long way back to the cabin. No one was trampled, but I woke this morning to the bawling of one especially mournful cow.

How sad! but also somehow really hilarious, the way you wrote it. I felt extra bad for the cows because I couldn’t stop laughing! :D
