Several years ago, a wise person once told me of the importance of having conversation pieces displayed around your home. Just yesterday I was describing to Chris how we need to be collecting interesting items from our various adventures to display in the cabin. Little did I realize that the cabin itself is a great conversation piece not to mention the relics inside.
Chihuahua dog is not only the first to greet our guests; he makes himself right at home in their cars. Even though we never feed this little guy, he insists on hanging around simply for a smile, or occasional pat on the head. Guests have described how he slips into their vehicle making himself at home in the passenger seat. Hoping to escape life in the piney woods of East Texas, I suppose?
Just this afternoon, my Aunt Susan came for a visit, and hesitatingly asked which type of chewing tobacco Chris preferred. Knowing how very conservative her niece Rebecca had been growing up, she was surprised to see this collection of wrappers framed by our kitchen table. I quickly put her mind at ease, assuring her that Chris does not chew.
For much of my junior high and high school days, my family and I lived in the southeast corner of Oklahoma. Living outside a small town, a regular trash pickup service was not available to my family. With a family of six children, the “green boxes” (dumpsters) down the country road came in very handy. We generated a lot of trash, and consequently, visited the green boxes frequently. A respectable family, we never participated in any dumpster diving…except once.
My family scavenged this sweet little oak chair from the green boxes near Idabel, OK. It was spattered with some sort of paint which came right off, and we have used it ever since. Here it sits prim and proper in my kitchen. I almost expect a four year old boy to be sitting in it receiving a scolding for pulling the cat’s tail.
Conversation pieces – a must have for any apartment, suburb home, mansion…or red cabin.

WOW!! You little thief!!! And who specifically rescued that chair???
Can’t wait to see you.
Actually, I believe it was dad. It looks so comfortable in my kitchen. You wouldn’t want to disrupt it now would you? Looking forward to next week as well!
LOVE the chair!!!
And do I see that the antlers didn’t survive on the window next to the stove?
Nope.
It was me. I remember that dusty day in South Eastern Oklahoma. At least I have my pictures back.
Are you sure about that, Stacy?
After both Chris and I banged our heads on them while trying to light the stove, they had to go.
